We are learning about time and temperature. I would like to learn more about different time zones and more about the different types of temperature.
We will be looking at celsius and farenheit next week Sarah. Mrs Breeds.

W.A.L.T. We are learning about different time zones around the world and how to calculate time differences.

W.A.L.T. About the difference between Celcius and Fahrenheit for temperature.
Fahrenheit was what back in the olden days they used to measure temperature in. Celcius is the newer way to measure temperature now. The formula for converting Fahrenheit to Celcius starts by minusing 32, multiplying by five then dividing by nine.
C=(F-32) x5 /9
Good explanation - it would've been good if you'd then given an example to show how to use your formula.

W.A.L.T. We are learning about exchange rates for currancy.

When people travel overseas different countries have different currencies. Like New Zealand uses New Zealand dollar and England uses pounds.

W.A.L.T Use algerbraic thinking to solve decimal subtraction problems.
On Wednesday we learnt how to use a useful strategy for solving decimal subraction problems fast and accurately.
For example.
Mary had $4.65 in her piggy bank. She spent $3.40 on some chocolates for her Grandpas birthday.
how much money did Mary have left?
4.60 - 3.40 = 1.2
+0.6 +0.6
5.2 - 4 = 1.2
This is a perfect strategy for solving this problem
I am pleased that you find this the perfect decimal subtraction strategy. It is definately an easy one to use when solving challenging problems. TC

W.A.L.T Draw and understand all of the four bargraphs.
This week I learnt about the four bar graphs. One of the bargraphs is called a Histogram. A histogram can use both discrete and continuous data.

W.A.L.T Evaluate statements about graphs.
Today we learnt how to evaluate statements about different graphs. I learnt about recognizing trends and writing accurate statements. I think that this was a good lesson for me this lesson will probably help me in my stats investigation.
That is good to hear Sarah.

W.A.L.T Draw and interpret a box and whisker graph.
Today I learnt how to be more confident when drawing and interpreting a box and whisker graph. My understanding before now was slightly foggy. This was a good lesson for me to get more confident when drawing a box and whisker plot. I know about the upper quartiles (the top 25% or top quarter of the data) and the lower quartiles (bottom 25% or bottom quarter of the data.) I could learn a bit more about the interquartile range. The box and whisker graph plots the median, range.
Are you happy with being able to interpret these as well?

This week I completed my statistical investigation survey on influenza. I think that I will get some good results back. I think that I have made my questions clear and easy to follow.

Journal Entry 27 May 2010
Today we had our Otago Problem Solving set two. I got 5/5! Yay!!! I was a bit confused on the last question and I'm still not sure exactly how I worked it out! I'm pretty happy with my result. (:
It is a great result..sometimes taking a gamble and believing in yourself can make a difference. Lots of space between your journal entries Sarah. Are you able to make this a prioroty at the beginning or end of the maths session. You can also do this at home - the beauty of it being on line.

I need to practise....
Place value and fractions in the stage 8 section of the knowledge test. That's where most of my gaps are.
I need to improve....

Today I got all of my surveys back. There are some very interesting results. Like most of the males haven't had the injection because they can't be bothered and not all of the health care workers are immunized, the swine flu scare last year did effect some peoples decisions, 31-45 year old were the slackest when it came to getting the flu injection and everyone exept three people had seen advertising but advertising wasn't anyones reason why they got it.
Very interesting findings. I am really looking forward to seeing your investigation and looking at the comparisons from last year. I wonder if the DHB would be interested in your findings? Perhaps we contact them and see?
